Towards Scalable MANETs
International audienceIn the near-future, self-organized networking is expected to become an important component in ITS, and in the Internet architecture in general. An essential challenge concerning the integration of this new component is the accomplishment of scalable and efficient mobile ad hoc routing. This paper overviews considerations relative to the design of such MANET protocols inside the framework provided by the IETF, stating the need for new hybrid protocols and architecture which offer a gradual transition from "traditional" MANET routing towards scalable MANET routing integrated in the Internet. This paper also proposes a tentative solution in this domain: DHT-OLSR, based on OLSR enhanced with dynamic clustering and distributed hash table routing
The Role of the Internet of Things in Network Resilience
Disasters lead to devastating structural damage not only to buildings and
transport infrastructure, but also to other critical infrastructure, such as
the power grid and communication backbones. Following such an event, the
availability of minimal communication services is however crucial to allow
efficient and coordinated disaster response, to enable timely public
information, or to provide individuals in need with a default mechanism to post
emergency messages. The Internet of Things consists in the massive deployment
of heterogeneous devices, most of which battery-powered, and interconnected via
wireless network interfaces. Typical IoT communication architectures enables
such IoT devices to not only connect to the communication backbone (i.e. the
Internet) using an infrastructure-based wireless network paradigm, but also to
communicate with one another autonomously, without the help of any
infrastructure, using a spontaneous wireless network paradigm. In this paper,
we argue that the vast deployment of IoT-enabled devices could bring benefits
in terms of data network resilience in face of disaster. Leveraging their
spontaneous wireless networking capabilities, IoT devices could enable minimal
communication services (e.g. emergency micro-message delivery) while the
conventional communication infrastructure is out of service. We identify the
main challenges that must be addressed in order to realize this potential in
practice. These challenges concern various technical aspects, including
physical connectivity requirements, network protocol stack enhancements, data
traffic prioritization schemes, as well as social and political aspects
DHT-OLSR
measuring and analyzing technical data for social trust between smartphones
Mobiles are nowadays the most relevant communication devices in terms of
quantity and flexibility. Like in most MANETs ad-hoc communication between two
mobile phones requires mutual trust between the devices. A new way of
establishing this trust conducts social trust from technically measurable data
(e.g., interaction logs). To explore the relation between social and technical
trust, we conduct a large-scale survey with more than 217 Android users and
analyze their anonymized call and message logs. We show that a reliable a
priori trust value for a mobile system can be derived from common social
communication metrics
Klausurtagung des Instituts für Telematik. Schloss Dagstuhl, 29. März bis 1. April 2000
Vielzahl
von integrierten Diensten effizient und mit größtmöglicher
Qualität zu erbringen.
Das "Telecooperation Office" (TecO,
Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. mult. G. KrĂĽger) ist ein Institutsbereich,
der in
Zusammenarbeit mit der Industrie anwendungsnahe
Forschungsthemen der
Telematik aufgreift. Im Mittelpunkt steht die innovative
Nutzung von
Kommunikationsinfrastrukturen mit den Schwerpunkten
Softwaretechnik
fĂĽr Web-Anwendungen, neue Formen der Telekooperation sowie
tragbare
und allgegenwärtige Technologien (Ubiquitous Computing).
Die Kernkompetenz des Forschungsbereichs "Cooperation &
Management"
(Prof. Dr. S. Abeck) liegt im prozessorientierten Netz-, System-
und
Anwendungsmanagement. Es werden werkzeuggestĂĽtzte
Managementlösungen für Betriebsprozesse entwickelt und in realen
Szenarien erprobt. Ein wichtiges Szenario stellt das
multimediale
Informationssystem "NEXUS" dar, das als Plattform eines
europaweit
verteilten Lehr- und Lernsystems genutzt wird.
Der Forschungsbereich "Hochleistungsnetze & Netzwerkmanagement"
(Prof. Dr. W. Juling) befasst sich mit Technologie und Konzepten
moderner leistungsfähiger Netzwerke sowie darüber hinaus mit
sämtlichen Aspekten des Managements dieser zumeist ausgedehnten
Netze. Um eine enge Abstimmung zwischen Forschungsaktivitäten
und
betrieblicher Praxis zu erzielen, werden insbesondere auch
Synergien
Ressourcenverwaltung
und adaptive und heterogene Systeme untersucht
Generalized Activity Assessment computed fully distributed within a Wireless Body Area Network
Currently available wearables are usually based on a single sensor node with
integrated capabilities for classifying different activities. The next
generation of cooperative wearables could be able to identify not only
activities, but also to evaluate them qualitatively using the data of several
sensor nodes attached to the body, to provide detailed feedback for the
improvement of the execution. Especially within the application domains of
sports and health-care, such immediate feedback to the execution of body
movements is crucial for (re-)learning and improving motor skills. To enable
such systems for a broad range of activities, generalized approaches for human
motion assessment within sensor networks are required. In this paper, we
present a generalized trainable activity assessment chain (AAC) for the online
assessment of periodic human activity within a wireless body area network. AAC
evaluates the execution of separate movements of a prior trained activity on a
fine-grained quality scale. We connect qualitative assessment with human
knowledge by projecting the AAC on the hierarchical decomposition of motion
performed by the human body as well as establishing the assessment on a
kinematic evaluation of biomechanically distinct motion fragments. We evaluate
AAC in a real-world setting and show that AAC successfully delimits the
movements of correctly performed activity from faulty executions and provides
detailed reasons for the activity assessment
